SHARROWS are pavement markings that indicate the roadway is shared by motor vehicles eBikes and pedal bicycles.
Consistent with their Deputy Directive 64 for a transition to multi-modal mobility, the California Department of Transportation CALTRANS placed Sharrows on South Coast Highway at Woods Cove, pictured is 'PCH' at Moss Street. In a town experiencing a wretched excess of automobiles the use of more cycling complements the 2012 LB bike route. Like the bike route and LB Trolley these interventions are a welcome alternative to motorist traffic in Laguna Beach.
THANK YOU CALTRANS, Department of Transformation.
Cyclists: The posted speed limit remains at 30 and 40mph, first adopters will learn to pedal harder.

Hi Les,
ReplyDeleteCould explain how drivers should deal with Sharrows? Do cars share the lane except when a biker is using it? And what does that mean in terms of separation between biker and cars? Is there a minimum distance to maintain, such as 50’ clearance from biker?
There are some unusual Sharrows on Park Avenue above Thurston school, combining different types of lanes in green and white. Any interpretation of what to do there?
As the California Vehicle Code is concerned, a bicycle is a vehicle, a car is a vehicle, so treat the bicycle rider as any other vehicle allowing safe following distance. There are bike lanes on Park Avenue with a painted Sharrow symbol in them making a confusing MESS. Treat the bike lane as exclusively for bike riders, no motorists in the bike lane.
ReplyDeleteTo clarify: There are bike-lanes on Park Avenue with painted bike symbols in them and lots of extra clobber making the bike-lane a confusing MESS.
