On Earth Day: Carbon Emission by ModeShare

The first chart shows the amount of gaseous carbon (CO2) released by vehicles from different transportation modes, US averages, data from the Federal Transit Administration.

Intuition would suggest buses emit more carbon than passenger cars but the chart above shows the opposite. A local UCI study using OCTA route data shows the emission level for a single occupancy car and diesel bus are equivalent when the occupancy is 8.

On Earth Day consider the cleaner alternatives to cars and buses: rail walk or bike, for those mode shares the research is universally clear.  Only 364 days till next Earth Day.         -LS
